Moldovan president at Mayors Summit: European integration - only way to ensure prosperity of communities

Chisinau, April 11 /MOLDPRES/- European integration is the only way to ensure the prosperity of communities in Moldova and the region. President Maia Sandu made the statement at the opening of the International Mayors Summit 2024, held in our country today.

Maia Sandu said that the event is an excellent opportunity to create partnerships between European cities, those of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine to facilitate the exchange of experience.

"The meeting brings together mayors and regional leaders of EU member states, who are building the cities of the future in a difficult geopolitical context. They are responding to the problems and challenges facing their communities. Today, mayors will present models of how to make the most of the opportunities offered by the EU. We all want developed cities. In recent years, the Government has made a significant effort to modernise roads, bridges, strengthen energy security and develop digital services. However, we also need a bold approach at local government level. This will greatly increase the chances for new businesses and well-paid jobs. We will only be able to build a European Moldova if we create European communities," said Maia Sandu.

The official also spoke about the revival of Ukrainian localities. "Rockets and bombs have fallen on them. We are ready to join the effort to rebuild settlements. Even under war conditions, Ukrainian local authorities manage to provide quality public services. We share the pain and confidence of a European future that will ensure peace, freedom and security. We are together on our European path", remarked Maia Sandu.

Today's summit in our country will focus on topics such as revitalising cities, increasing attractiveness for human capital and developing the economic profile.

"The event is a unique platform of vital importance that delivers tangible results. We are all aware that engaging local leaders in global challenges is extremely important. Today we will discuss sustainable development and how we can address local issues. I want to congratulate the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine for the progress on EU integration," said Ned Price, Deputy Head of the US Diplomatic Mission to the UN.

The International Mayors Summit was launched in 2016 in Ukraine as a knowledge-sharing platform for local government leaders. The event is in its fifth edition and is being held with the support of Maia Sandu.
