Orthodox Christians start the Lent

10:52 | 18.03.2024 Category: Social

Chisinau, 18 March /MOLDPRES/ - The Orthodox Christians today started the Lent - the severest fasting period out of the four ones during the year and which prepares the people for the Holy Easter, celebrated on 5 May this year.

According to the Orthodox Calendar, during seven weeks, the believers will no longer eat dairy products, eggs, meat and fish and will not consume alcoholic beverages. The Lent lasts 40 days, to which the Passion Week is added. During those 40 days, there are two days when the believers are allowed to eat fish: on the Annunciation of the Virgin and on the Palm Sunday. On this period, no weddings are held.

Moreover, the Christians must restrain themselves from certain bad thoughts, desires, passions and bad deeds. This means that the alimentary fasting must be accompanied by the spiritual one.

In 2024, The Orthodox Easter is marked on 5 May, in 2025 – on 20 April and in 2026 – on 12 April.
