Group of Moldovans from Iceland cover over 2,000 km up to Oslo to exercise right to vote

Chisinau, 20 October /MOLDPRES/ - A group of Moldovans who live in Iceland have covered over 2,000 km up to Oslo, Norway, in order to exercise their right to vote at the presidential elections and the republican constitutional referendum on Moldova’s accession to the European Union.
„We are hugely proud of our Moldovans from the Nordic states who, through their impressive efforts, proved a true unity and a deep devotion for the democratic values. A special example is the group of Moldovans from Iceland, who flew to Oslo for several hours, covering over 2,000 km to exercise their right to vote. This commitment for the country inspires and motivates us everybody! We thank from the bottom of our hearts those who take extraordinary efforts to vote! Your vote matters!’’ is the message of Moldova’s Embassy in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland.
Also, several families from Bergen travelled 500 km to exercise the right to vote.
Moldova’s citizens who stay in Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Finland were able to express their right to vote through correspondence – a procedure enforced for the first time ever at the presidential elections and the republican constitutional referendum organized today. Thus, the vote by correspondence gave the Diaspora Moldovans a convenient option of participation in the elections, no matter the distance. The Electoral Bureau 38/234 from Stockholm informed that 313 voting envelopes had been approved and sent for the today’s ballot, of which: 90 envelopes for Sweden, 127 envelopes for Norway, 70 envelopes for Finland and 26 envelopes for Iceland.
According to data by the Central Electoral Commission, till 16:30, over 150,000 citizens of Moldova who live abroad voted at the presidential elections and the republican constitutional referendum on accession to the European Union.
Presidential elections and the republican constitutional referendum are held in Moldova. At the referendum, the citizens are to answer the question: ‘’Do you support the Constitution’s amendment for Moldova’s accession to the European Union?’’
As many as 231 polling stations were created abroad for the ballot.
