Chisinau, 2 December /MOLDPRES/ - A smart video monitoring system, meant to enhance the public security and modernize the municipal services, has been developed in the western Ungheni city of Moldova. The project includes a video monitoring centre, an extended network of optic fibre of about 19 km and an advanced software, which allows the authorities to promptly respond to emergencies, incidents and to ensure the safety of the residents.

The system includes 52 high-resolution IP cameras, placed strategically in intersections, streets, leisure areas, public institutions and waste collection platforms. The project, worth 103,815 euros, was backed by the programme EU4Moldova: Focal Regions, financed by EU and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The Video Monitoring Centre, created at the headquarters of the Ungheni Police Inspectorate, is endowed with a high-resolution video wall and advanced servers, ensuring the preservation in safety of the closed-loop data for more than 60 days. The centre has two working stations endowed with last generation IT equipment, in order to facilitate a quick and efficient response to alerts on behalf of operators.

„The video monitoring system is an important step for the safety and order in our city. Now, we can quickly respond to incidents, can prevent the offences and can take care of the residents’ safety. We thank EU and UNDP for the support of this project,’’ the deputy head of the Ungheni Police Inspectorate, Ruslan Grecu, said.

The smart video monitoring system includes advanced analytical software, able to detect the vehicles according to categories, to monitor crowds and analyze diverse events and incidents. This software is compatible with the future platform, Smart City, which will be managed by the Ungheni city hall and allows the interconnection with third sides through a module of external access, facilitating the cooperation between diverse institutions. The Smart City Ungheni platform will contain five modules: video monitoring, public street illumination, management of the public transport and residents’ involvement.

The smart video monitoring system inaugurated in Ungheni is of modular type, which will allow its further development through the adding of up to 1,000 video cameras. A similar smart video monitoring system will be set in the Cahul city as well.

The EU4Moldova: Focal Regions, programme (2019-2025) supports the smart, inclusive and sustainable social and economic development, in order to provide the residents with better living standards. The programme has an overall budget of 23 million euros, is financed by the European Union and is implemented by UNDP and UNICEF.
