German government offers €14 million grant to improve water infrastructure in Center Region

Chisinau, Dec. 16 /MOLDPRES/- Chisinau, Straseni and Calarasi will benefit from investments to modernize the water supply system. The project will start in early 2025.
The Memorandum of Understanding for the implementation of the project, Open Program on Urban Development in Moldova, Phase I, was signed late last week by Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea, representatives of the German Development Bank KfW, the city halls of Chisinau, Straseni, Calarasi, the Center Regional Development Agencies and Chisinau municipality, as well as the National Office for Regional and Local Development.
Bolea thanked the German Government for the contribution to the implementation of regional development projects aimed at improving the living conditions of Moldovan citizens.
Following the project's implementation, more than 14 thousand inhabitants of Călărași and 19 thousand of Strășeni will have improved access to drinking water after the rehabilitation and extension of the water supply networks. People from the villages of Pitușca and Vărzăreștii Noi, Călărași district, a total of around 5 thousand, will also have water in their households after the localities will be connected to Chișinău-Strășeni-Călărași main aqueduct and internal water distribution networks will be built.
The project also envisages the connection of the village of Căpriana, Strășeni district, to Chișinău-Strășeni-Călărași main aqueduct and the construction of internal water distribution networks in the locality for 2.6 thousand inhabitants.
Around 650 thousand inhabitants in Chisinau, almost 78 thousand in Călărași district and 92 thousand in Strășeni district will benefit from improved access to water.
The project has a budget of EUR 14 million and is supported by the German Government through the KfW Development Bank. The initiative is part of the project Water Supply and Sanitation in Central Moldova financed by the German Government through the KfW Development Bank in the amount of EUR 40 million grant, and declared by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova in 2022 as one of national importance. The project will start construction works on Chisinau-Strășeni-Călărași aqueduct in the first quarter of 2025.
