Moldova ratifies European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals

Chisinau, 19 December /MOLDPRES/ - The lawmakers today ratified the European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals.
The document contains provisions regarding the protection of the health of the pet animals, development of programmes on informing and education concerning the observance by the owners of animals of the rules of good attitude towards these animals.
Other provisions stipulate that the owners must not abandon the animals, but should provide them with all conditions and care needed. At the same time, the pet animals cannot be sold to people younger than 16 years, without parents’ agreement. Also, the surgical interventions meant for the change of the look of a pet animal are banned.
Financial sources available in the national budget will be used for the carrying out of the Convention’s provisions, including the assistance provided by development partners.
Most MPs present at the meeting noted that they had pet animals at home.
The European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals was signed in Strasbourg on 13 November 1987. So far, 26 states have ratified the Convention.
