Chisinau, Dec 20 /MOLDPRES/- The Environment Ministry yesterday signed a contract with the Greek consulting company Environplan on implementation and supervision of construction works under Moldova Solid Waste Project, aimed at improving waste management in the country. "The signing of this contract is a significant step towards improving waste management at the national level, contributing to the protection of the environment and increasing the quality of life of citizens," said relevant Minister Sergiu Lazarencu.

According to the contract, Environplan will support the Ministry of Environment and the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) by providing consultancy during the three stages of project implementation. It will also carry out technical supervision and consultancy activities, developing the terms of reference for zones 5 and 8, as well as for the company that will be responsible for design and construction. "The aim is to select the winning company for the seven districts in November next year, thus ensuring an efficient and quality implementation of the project," Lazarencu explains.

The project will be implemented in two areas of the country: RMD 5 (Ungheni, Nisporeni, Calarasi;) and RMD 8 (Briceni, Ocnita, Edinet, Dondușeni). The investments will target the infrastructure necessary for waste collection, transportation and treatment, according to the National Waste Management Strategy 2013-2027. The contract is worth €2.8 million, of which 70% will be covered by the EBRD and 30% by the Government. The project will be implemented by late 2029, including the guarantee period.

With financing of €25 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, €25 million from the European Investment Bank and €15 million from the Eastern European Partnership for Energy Efficiency and Environmental Protection (E5P), the project will help make waste management in the Republic of Moldova more efficient and environmentally friendly, thus contributing to the protection of the environment and improving the quality of life of the inhabitants.
