Orthodox Christians celebrate new-style Christmas

Chisinau, Dec. 25 /MOLDPRES/- Traditionally, on December 25, many Christians in the Republic of Moldova celebrate the Birth of the Lord in a new style. Christmas marks the birth about two thousand years ago of Christ and is celebrated by believers who follow the Gregorian calendar.
Christmas is one of the 12 Kingdom Feasts of the Orthodox Church and is one of the most important feasts of the liturgical year.
One of the main customs of Christmas is caroling.
The feast is also marked by the decorating of the Christmas tree.
In Moldova, several churches celebrate it on 25 December.
Old-style Christmas, according to the Julian calendar, is to be celebrated on January 7. To give everyone the opportunity to celebrate with their families, the authorities have decided to declare December 25, January 7 and 8 as official holidays.
