Chisinau, Dec. 30 /MOLDPRES/- The import of wheat, corn and sunflowers into Moldova remains subject to a license until 30 June 2025. Government approved the decision to extend the validity of the licensing regime today, the government's communications department has reported.
The further regulation of imports of the products is aimed at protecting local farmers and maintaining the stability of the domestic agricultural market, in the context of the existing challenges in the agri-food sector.
The licensing mechanism for wheat, corn and sunflower imports was set up in October 2023. The licensing prevented a surplus of imports, especially from Ukraine, at significantly lower prices, which would have lowered the value of local products.
The mechanism also guaranteed priority access for processing companies to local raw material, which allowed farmers to market the products at competitive prices and protected their income and investments.
According to data as of the beginning of December, wheat, corn and sunflower stocks are sufficient to meet all domestic needs in the coming months: wheat - 290 thousand tons, corn - 662 thousand tons, sunflower - 249.6 thousand tons.
