Chisinau, 7 January /MOLDPRES/ - Gazprom’s decision to cease the supply of gas to Moldova starting from 1 January 2025 is aimed at undermining the political and economic stability. The statement is contained in a joint declaration of the Nordic Baltic countries on the energy situation in Moldova.

The document appreciates the Moldovan authorities’ actions as to the measures of ensuring the supply with gas and electric energy in these difficult circumstances.

„We will work with the European Commission and other key partners, in order to be prepared to boost the international assistance for Moldova. The recent improvements of the infrastructure and the enhanced transport capacities significantly increased Moldova’s resilience to the energy pressures from abroad, showing the country’s commitment to consolidate its energy security,’’ the declaration reads.

The Nordic Baltic states stressed that they stayed firmly committed to support Moldova in managing the present energy challenges and in the advancement of the energy sector’s reform.

„These efforts are essential not only for Moldova’s sustainable development, but also for the stability of the region, especially in the light of the wider goals of energy security of Europe and of the Russian aggression against Ukraine underway,’’ the document also reads.

The Russian giant Gazprom suspended the delivery of natural gas to Moldova starting from 1 January 2025. Given a potential humanitarian crisis in the Transnistrian region because of the non-observance by Russia of the contract on deliveries of natural gas to the consumers from the left bank of Dniester, Moldova has been in state of emergency beginning with 16 December 2024.
