Moldovan PM gives interview with Euronews

Chisinau, 8 January /MOLDPRES/ - The Kremlin wants to see a pro-Russian government in the long run, which is to allow it consolidating the military presence in the Transnistrian region. Prime Minister Dorin Recean has made statements to this effect in an interview with Euronews.

The material published in Euronews describes the energy situation in Moldova, after the Gazprom giant ceased the deliveries of natural gas starting from 1 January 2025.

According to the official, Moscow triggered a humanitarian crisis in the region, ‘’in order to destabilize the pro-European government.’’ ‘’People do have not electricity four hours per day, do not have heating and have no access to natural gas. There are also interruptions in the supply with water,’’ PM Dorin Recean said.

The article from Euronews also reads that the Moldovan government offered to help, but Tiraspol refused the support.

„Unlike the Transnistrian region, Moldova was less hit by the interruption of the supply with gas. The country ceased relying on the Russian gas in 2022, after Moscow’s large-scale invasion in Moldova and now it enjoys support on behalf of Romania. Nevertheless, the Transnistrian region stays quite dependent on the Russian gas, which supplies with Kuchurgan power station,’’ reads the material made by Euronews journalists.

The quoted source explains that Moscow might try to put the blame for the interruption of the supply on the Moldovan government and on Kiev, after Ukraine refused to renew the agreement on transit from 2019 with the Russian authorities for the delivery of gas on its territory.

„With the nearing of the parliamentary elections in Moldova, there is the concern that the Kremlin might initiate a misinformation campaign. Brussels keeps a close eye on the situation, as Moldova is candidate for accession to the European Union and EU is the principal financial supporter of the country,’’ Euronews specified.

The European Commission informed that it was undertaking a string of measures, in order to make sure that Moldova can be supplied with electric energy. The Commission also urged the EU member states to prove energy solidarity with Moldova.

The Russian giant Gazprom suspended the delivery of natural gas to Moldova beginning with 1 January 2025. Given a potential humanitarian crisis in the Transnistrian region because of the non-observance by Russia of the contract on the supply of natural gas to the consumers from the left bank of Dniester, Moldova has been in an emergency state beginning with 16 December 2024.
